Irvine High School won the team title at the Irvine City Weightlifting Championships on May 15 in the most tightly contested competition in the history of the event.
After the second of three rotations Irvine, eventual runner-up Northwood, and third place finisher Woodbridge were tied at 160 points each and only 15 points separated first place from third at the end of the evening.
The competition, held this year at University High School, pits the top lifters from the football programs at each Irvine district school in three events – clean, squat, and bench press – across nine weight classes, and is open to all athletes with at least a year of football eligibility remaining.
James Hong of Woodbridge was recognized as lifter of the meet, a pound for pound honor determined by total amount lifted divided by body weight.
With a total of 1,015 pounds lifted across the three events, Hong set a weight class record for overall weight in the 225-pound class, as well as cleaning a weight class record 285 pounds.
Hong defeated teammate Kyle Merritt, who swept all three events in the 180-pound class, for the honor.
The overall weight class winners were Cody Inglis (Northwood) in the 150 class, James Wylly (Woodbridge) at 160, Shane Whippo (Irvine) at 170, Kyle Merritt (Woodbridge) at 180, Ian Thomason (Irvine) at 190, Justin Herndon (Irvine) at 205, Hong (Woodbridge) at 225, Robbie Cameron (Uni) at 245, and Erik Blyar (Irvine) in the Heavyweight class.
The competition has been held annually since 1999 (except for 2002). This is Irvine’s fifth team title.
