Irvine High's football team will open its 2009 schedule, facing Woodbridge in a nonleague game on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at Irvine Stadium.
"The schedule is similar to the last few years," said Coach Terry Henigan. "We're glad we don't have a week zero game and glad we don't have a bye. It will be a very difficult schedule for us."
Henigan said that his squad has, "quite a bit of experience in the offensive skilled positions, five new starting offensive linemen and only two starters back on offense and a new kicker.
"Even with all that, we feel good about our off-season and spring ball. It might take us a while to get going but we hope to be competitive by the time the season comes along."
Irvine begins practice on Aug. 24. The Vaqueros have a scrimmage against Sunny Hills on Friday, Sept. 4, at 4:30 p.m. at Irvine Stadium.

Irvine High Athletic Director Erik Terry said predicts that this year's group of Irvine Senior Scholar Athletes will go on and "make us all proud."
Year in and year out, that's what they've been doing.
This year's group of scholar athletes from Irvine, Northwood, Woodbridge and University was honored Monday night at the 36th annual Exchange Club's Irvine Senior Scholar Sports Awards Banquet at the Caspian Restaurant at Irvine. The program was sponsored by the Orange County Register and Irvine World News.
The program, which had been held at the Irvine Marriott for many years, had a new venue. Terry said organizers were looking for a more affordable place so that more family members could attend.
More than 200 were in attendance at the Caspian Restaurant.
Guests were greeted by Mike Flynn, president of the Exchange Club and Anthony Kuo, chairman of the program.
A slide show detailed the achievements of the scholar athletes from the four high schools in the Irvine Unified School District.
"You have set the bar higher for the younger athletes," Terry said.
Irvine High's female scholar athletes were Anna Natalizio, Sarah Callian, Regina Wiher and Victoria Park. Natalizio was the female scholar athlete.
Irvine's male athletes were Nik Abele, Kyle Chene, Michael Ernst and Lang Pierce. Ernst was the male scholar athlete of the year.
