Vaqueros’ six-game streak ends
BY TIM BURT SPORTS EDITOR

Irvine’s football team decided not to go for a tie Friday night in a Pacific Coast League game against Corona del Mar.
The Vaqueros went for two points and the win following a touchdown’ in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t convert on a
pass play and fell to the Sea Kings, 14-13, at Newport Harbor High.
“We wanted to win,” Irvine coach Terry Henigan said. “If we didn’t want to win, I wouldn’t have gone for two. We thought it was important.”
Corona del Mar (6-2, 1-1) moved out to a 14-7 lead when quarterback Mitch Sands connected with J.D. Abbott on a 3-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.
But Irvine (6-2, 1-1) made it close when quarterback Allen Merritt connected with Lang Pierce on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 7:44 remaining.
The pass play then fell incomplete.
“Knowing Coach Henigan, it doesn’t surprise me, he’s the kind of guy who comes to win a football game, that’s the kind of competitor he is,” Corona del Mar coach Jason Hitchens said. “I told him after the game, I thought it was a gutsy call on his part.”
Irvine looked like it might get another chance to rally late in the game. But punter John Christian booted a 65-yard punt, pinning Irvine back to its own 8-yard line with 1:52 left.
Two plays later, the Vaqueros fumbled and the Sea Kings recovered.
Corona del Mar quarterback Mitch Sands then went to his knee two times to run the clock out ending Irvine’s sixgame winning streak.
“All the way around, I thought we played a pretty complete game,” Hitchens said.
Sands led the way, completing 15 of 25 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The first came when he hit Max Haase on a 9-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.

This Weeks Game

IRVINE (5-1) VS. BECKMAN (5-1)
SITE, TIME: Tustin High, Saturday, 2 p.m. OUTLOOK: It’s the Pacific Coast League opener for both teams. Irvine is coming off an impressive 7-6 victory over Cypress, the defending Southern Division champions while Beckman defeated Woodbridge, 2 1 -1 4.
Beckman is shooting for its first playoff berth but will face another stiff challenge in the Pacific Coast League.
Beckman Coach Fred Shambaugh said the Vaqueros present many challenges.
“Irvine has the best O-Line that we have seen this year thus far,” he said. “They have an outstanding defense that makes very few mistakes. They certainly don’t beat themselves. With both teams running the ball so much it is going to be a quick game.”
Irvine Coach Terry Henigan said Beckman is “solid.”
“It seems like they have simplified things,” Henigan said. “They’re executing things really well and they have some fine athletes. We’ve always had trouble with them as far as their defense, they’re very physical.
“We won both games, we’ve only played twice, but they’ve out-physicalled us both of those times so we will have a hard time moving the ball on them.
“Offensively, the passing game has really improved as the season has gone along so now they can beat you with the passing game. The thing they like to do is run the ball, they got a good O-line and they have some quality running backs.”

Athlete of the Week- Nik Abele

IRVINE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
NIK ABELE
IRVINE, FOOTBALL
Nik Abele missed the Irvine High football team’s final three games of the 2007 season.
He is making up for lost time this year.
The 6-6, 255-pound offensive lineman and defensive end has been a key player in Irvine’s 5-1 start to 2008.
Irvine has won five games in a row, including scoring a big 7-6 victory over Cypress last week.
Abele had two tackles for losses, one sack and recovered a fumble in the win over Cypress, which is the defending CIF Southern Division champion.
“He is a great role model, nice young man and is very humble,” Irvine coach Terry Henigan said. “He is a tremendous high school football player.”
And one that is sure to be sought out by numerous college programs.
In five games played this year, Abele has 15 lead tackles, 20 assisted tackles, four tackles for losses, three sacks and six quarterback hurries.
The third-year varsity player also does it with his focus always on the team and the game at hand.
“He is a quiet leader,” Henigan said. “He leads by example. But he has tremendous work ethic whether it be in the weight room, on the practice field, doing agilities or playing the game.”
