Pleasant, Boulton lead Kennedy past Irvine

IRVINE - Eli Pleasant scored three touchdowns and Kennedy used a powerful offensive attack to defeat Irvine, 39-17, in a nonleague game Saturday night at Irvine High.
Pleasant caught a pass for a TD, ran for another and returned an interception for a score as the Fighting Irish (1-2) earned their first victory of the season.
“We continued to fight and we deserved this win,” said Pleasant, who finished with four receptions. “We worked hard and this will be motivation for the rest of our season.”
Kennedy scored three times in the first quarter to take a commanding 20-0 lead and never looked back.
Pleasant capped the Fighting Irish’s opening drive with a 12-yard TD run. Moments later,
Mike Evans caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Andy Peterson. Pleasant then quieted the crowd as he returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown.
DJ Boulton added two short touchdown runs in the second quarter as Kennedy led, 33-3, at the half.
Peterson had an outstanding game, rushing for 109 yards and completing nine passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Boulton rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
Peterson guided the Kennedy offense as the Fighting Irish racked up 301 yards in the first half.
Matt Van and Kevin Torres added fourth quarter touchdowns runs of 26 and 49 yards for Irvine (1-1). Vaqueros’, freshman running back
DaVonte Young, who rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns last week in a win against Woodbridge, did not play because of a leg injury.

IRVINE – Irvine freshman DaVonte Young will remember his first varsity game for some time. Young scored three touchdowns and rushed for 202 yards on 16 carries to lead the Vaqueros to a 27-14 nonleague victory over Woodbridge Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Irvine High. Young got some help from a solid Irvine defensive unit, which blanked Woodbridge in the first half allowing Irvine to take a 20-0 lead. “It was a pretty good game,” Young said. “I want to say thank you for all my teammates blocking for me. Football is a team sport and I’m glad our team came out ready to play.”

KICKOFF 2009: Irvine hopes to make a title run

Irvine High's football team loses some key players off of last year's team, including all-county lineman Nik Abele, who is now at UCLA.
But Coach Terry Henigan can still count on some talented returning players and has confidence in his new players.
"We had a lot of seniors last year, so we have a lot of new faces and we're happy with all the new faces," said Henigan, who will retire after the season after 29 years as head coach. "But I think we have a ways to go, that's for sure."

    “I knew there had to be a time when he had to move on, but it was still pretty shocking,” said Hills.

Kickoff '09: Irvine Vaqueros

Irvine has a number of spots to fill. The Vaqueros lose talented lineman Nik Abele, who earned a scholarship at UCLA. Quarterback Allen Merritt, who was used as a starter most of last season, wide receiver Jake Day and senior linebacker Ryan Payne should help the Vaqueros challenge for the league title. Irvine gave league champion Laguna Hills a battle last year before losing, 28-14.
